Function of Beauty | Self-Photography & Creative Direction

Sometimes, a single design element is enough to spark an entire concept. When I received a PR package from Function of Beauty, the campaign-themed newspaper inside immediately stood out. Its editorial feel and bold visuals inspired me to build a shoot around it—leaning into a raw, resourceful approach to bring the idea to life.

Creating the Scene

With no elaborate setup or professional studio, I transformed my small bathroom into a makeshift campaign set. I taped the newspaper across the walls, letting its print and texture become the foundation of the shoot. The tight space forced me to think outside the box, experimenting with angles and composition to craft visually striking imagery.

The Challenge of Self-Photography

Shooting alone always presents unique challenges. Balancing between directing, posing, and capturing the right shot required patience and adaptability. I alternated between my phone and digital camera, adjusting lighting and framing with each shot. Every movement was intentional, ensuring the final images carried the campaign-inspired aesthetic I envisioned.

Finding Creativity in Constraints

Despite the limited space and equipment, this shoot reinforced my ability to bring a concept to life using only what’s available. It was a reminder that creativity isn’t about having the perfect setup—it’s about making the most of what you have and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
